Fernando Sanfiel was born in Breña Alta, La Palma, into a tobacco family. His earliest memories are of the fields and the pilón — and it was a childhood encounter with one that would shape the rest of his life. At four years old, an incident opening a tobacco pile triggered an allergy that forced his family out of the trade entirely. The connection to the leaf, it turned out, was never finished.

He went on to build a life of unusual breadth — professional footballer, cyclist, master diving instructor, speleologist, sailor, and business coach among his credentials. But it was in 2007, when Finca Tabaquera El Sitio appointed him CEO to lead a full recovery of the company, that tobacco reclaimed him. Over five years he rebuilt the brand from the ground up, designed four signature vitolas, and established quality standards that would define La Palma's artisan production.

What followed was an equally ambitious chapter at Destilerías Aldea, where he led the development of an organic sugarcane cultivation programme that produced the ron agricole Caña Pura — and designed the island's Museum of Sugarcane and Rum. Two Premium craft traditions, one quietly authoritative voice across both.

In 2017 he launched a broader initiative to promote La Palma's artisan producers through curated tastings, pairings and events — drawing on his work as a sommelier educator, his appearances at international tobacco fairs, and his co-authorship of the Premium Cigar qualification regulation for La Palma's Biosphere Reserve. He currently contributes to several specialist publications on tobacco and gastronomy. At MGA, his writing brings the same discipline he applies to a tasting: precise, unhurried, and built on a lifetime of earned knowledge.
