"If I stand behind a house, it's because I would still smoke those cigars even if no one was watching."

— Ray Prodanov, MGA Q&A

Ray Prodanov came to cigars not through the trade, but through curiosity — the same instinct that led him to buy a pair of antique Royal Jamaica boxes at an auction over a decade ago, smoke one on a whim, and find himself unable to stop thinking about why it tasted the way it did. That first encounter set off a chain of events he describes simply as a pursuit of knowledge that never really stopped.

He spent years building the kind of foundation most people in the industry take decades to acquire — attending events, asking the questions that surprised brand owners, earning his formal Cigar Sommelier qualification in 2021 not because he was already in the trade, but because he wanted to earn his place in it properly. When Jonathan Drew asked him which company he represented at an event in Scotland in 2019, Ray's answer — that he didn't work in cigars at all — was the moment a passion became a calling.

Today, he divides his time between brand consulting, events, sensory education, and his role as Brand Ambassador for Freud Cigar Co. His tasting panel work with Cigar Journal spans over five years. His events career includes more than 170 gatherings in three years alone.

What sets Ray apart from the chorus of voices in the premium cigar space is a refusal to smoke the label. He advocates for blind tasting, palate-led judgement, and the kind of honest assessment that his consulting reputation was built on. His perspective extends beyond the humidor — into regulation, supply chains, and the cultural forces quietly reshaping who cigars are for and where they are headed.
