Matt Abé opened Bonheur on the former site of Le Gavroche in November 2025. By February, Michelin had awarded it two stars. The weight of the room — the address, the ghost, eighteen years in Gordon Ramsay’s kitchen — is considerable. The food is more considerable still.

Upper Brook Street in Mayfair carries a particular weight for anyone who has followed serious cooking in London over the past four decades. Number 43 was Le Gavroche — the Roux brothers’ institution, the first restaurant in Britain to earn three Michelin stars, the room that trained more significant British chefs than any other address in the country. It closed in January 2024 after fifty-seven years. When Matt Abé took the space eight months later and announced it would become Bonheur — the French word for happiness — the expectation was considerable. Two Michelin stars in three months confirmed it was warranted.
Abé spent eighteen years in Gordon Ramsay’s brigade, latterly as chef patron of Restaurant Gordon Ramsay on Royal Hospital Road, where he maintained three stars for eight consecutive years. That record of consistency is the context for understanding what Bonheur represents — not a debut in the conventional sense, but the first time a chef of that calibre has cooked under his own name in his own room. The distinction matters to him, and it shows in the plates.

The former Le Gavroche basement has been remade in warm peach and ochre, rounded edges replacing the dark corners of its predecessor. It is a room that has absorbed the pressure of its own history and responded by becoming softer rather than stiffer — a considered decision that extends to the service and the menus. Abé greets each table during the appetiser course himself, describing the snacks without ceremony and suggesting there is no prescribed order. Guests choose from a five-course Journey menu or a seven-course Dream, or an à la carte for those with less appetite for the full architecture of a tasting.
The cooking carries Abé’s Australian heritage in precise, controlled doses — nowhere heavy-handed, always present. Standout dishes include a reworking of the classic Quiche Lorraine that earns its place on the menu by being better than the original, and a 125-day aged Cumbrian Blue Grey sirloin sourced exclusively from Lake District Farmers and aged specifically for Bonheur. The signature Pecan Praline — a chocolate mousse with crunchy praline, a thin shell, a single candied pecan and dots of sherry gel — closes the meal with the confidence of something that was conceived complete.

A Michelin Inspector’s account of the meal noted that Bonheur did not disappoint despite all the promise and expectation — high praise from an institution that has made a practice of understatement. For a restaurant to enter the guide at two stars on its first inclusion is rare. To do so in three months, on a site carrying the full weight of Le Gavroche’s legacy, is a statement of the kind that defines a generation of Mayfair dining.
Reservations are available through the restaurant’s website. The sensible approach is to book the seven-course Dream menu on a Friday evening, with the sommelier’s wine pairing. Claudia, whom several reviewers have singled out by name, is by all accounts exceptional.
